About Laura
I am dedicated to helping You Live Your Best Life.
About Me:
My name is Laura De Bruyn, Grandma, LauLau and Mum. Since becoming widowed after my husband’s long battle with cancer, my ‘at home’ family consists of a dog, cat, and 100+ birds who have helped unite me with my neighborhood community.
After working for 15 years in a family bakery, I finally followed my dream and studied at the University of Tasmania, graduating with a Bachelor of Education in 2004. I taught across all age ranges, school settings and curriculum areas in my ten years of experience, specialising in children with neurodivergent learning issues.
A lifetime spent learning and teaching art and crafts, and my teaching and life experiences led me to an Art Therapist Practitioner course through Health and Harmony College in 2023. This enabled me to volunteer with a Teen Challenge Meaningful Art program to build on my growing skill set. I graduated from the course in November 2023 and remained with the Meaningful Art Program for another 12 months. I have recently returned to Health and Harmony College to upgrade to Clinical Art Therapist, ensuring my skills continue to develop to give you the best possible service.
I have also recently added NDIS training to my skill set and can now accept NDIS clients on a managed or self managed plan for art coaching with core daily activities funding.
Based on my life experiences and skill set, my focus is on improving learning and life skills for neurodivergent children and helping teens negotiate life as they become young adults. This includes helping families as they approach these hurdles together. Providing support for adults in need of direction, confidence and motivation in this fast-paced, material society is also a priority.

I had an art therapy session with Laura focused on anxiety, and it was such a great experience. Working with clay and collage really helped me open up and see things about myself I hadn’t noticed before. Laura had such a calm, caring energy that made it easy to relax and just be in the moment. I was left feeling lighter and a lot more aware. Would highly recommend

Frequently Asked Questions
Have Any Questions For Us?
Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions. If you cannot find what you are looking for, please use the contact us link and Laura will be happy to answer any further questions.

How is art therapy different to Counselling?
Art therapy focuses on creating a visual image from your inner being. It is this process of creation that builds space to reflect, explore and communicate solutions and healing. Sometimes we are so overwhelmed by life that there are no words. the artwork provides an external focal point that can provide an alternative, safe place to gain perspective and insights into trauma and life issues on a deeper level than conversation alone.
Who can do art therapy?
Anyone seeking clarity, relief from trauma or pain or life improvements can do art therapy. Art therapy is a proven technique used with children and adults to help build coping skills, improve learning, communication, relationship and life skills, deal with trauma and improve health and well-being. It is an effective treatment used by clients with depression, anxiety, disabilities, anger issues and substance abuse. Individuals, couples and groups – workplace, sporting and social groups and families can all benefit from tailored sessions.
I cannot draw very well. will art therapy still work for me?
Yes. Laura will gently guide you to put pen to paper, paint on a brush or feel the clay and you will be creating before you know it. There are no art rules or judgement as art therapy is more about the process than the finished article. Every session is a safe, confidential space to explore what makes you the person you are or want to be.
i am nervous to start. Can I bring a friend or carer with me?
Yes. your session is all about you. a carer, support worker or friend is welcome to participate in the art activities and contribute to any discussion if that makes you feel more comfortable. the main focus is on you as the client and ensuring your needs are met in the best possible way is important at art therapy for life.
how many sessions do I need to attend?
the number of sessions depends on the issues raised. to ensure the best resolution is reached over a period of time, 4 – 6 sessions may provide the answers to many issues. Workshops can be a one off event in a workplace situation or ongoing such as the pre-teen and teen workshops run on Monday afternoons. These workshops aim to build social networking as well as life skills and participants tend to come along for longer periods that can be anything from a school term to several years.
